Show Record one or two channels, we might get into the wrong one, and would have to go back and get into the other one. When I referred to the larger boat I mean the Marguerite that pushed the equipment down. I think the Betsy Ann was made originally for the Government. They may later have put some power on the Betsy Ann to come back up. The Marguerite was the power on the scow. The scow was ahead of it and the Marguerite pushed it. I would say I got on sand bars two or three times a day. Sometimes it would be more often than others. The sand bar was entirely an unknown quantity. It would appear and occur at inter-vals, according to the nature of the river at that place. I was at the junction of the Green and Colorado with the party until they completed their work, except I made two or three trips out on the Green River and the Grand River. I remember making two distinct trips on the Grand to Moab. On the trip between 3658 the junction and Moab I encountered difficulties that were similar, or possibly worse, than on the Green. The first trip out was not as bad as the last trip, which was taken soon after flood 3659 water. 3660 I know why drilling at the junction ceased. The flood waters came down and destroyed the equipment that we were drilling 3661 with and the drill went down the river. After this occurrence the drilling outfit was taken out. The steam boiler was equipped on one of the barges with a paddle wheel geared to it from the rear and it came out under its own power. The " Marguerite" was used as power on the other barge. The other motor boat and my boat were attached to the other scow and we brought that out. We encountered sand bars on the river I think more frequently than coming down. It was naturally a harder trip, being up stream. After the high water we had had, the sand bars had changed their position, and even the larger land marks that I tried to remember were removed. Of course there were such places where there were permanent land marks along the bank, but the channel of the river had been changed in a great many places. There were places that were high places |
