Show Record two times, August 15 and September 10, a fill of two feet at that point had taken place. Other points were similar. The 30- feet point on the chart was usually about 5 or 6 feet from the edge of the right bank of the river, and the 190- foot point was about 10 or 15 feet from the edge of the river. The average width of the river there was about 165 to 170 feet at the time most of these soundings were made. Roughly speaking the chart tends to show that there was between the date of the lowest line and the date when the highest 3829 line was completed a fill of from one to two feet. This Exhibit, 496, shows greater variances in the amount of scour and fill, but they were based on three points of soundings across the river whereas this one, 495, was based on points of soundings. Here, on August 13, it was .2 of a foot on the gage above zero, and on July 29 it was at 6.4 above zero, showing that between the 29th of July and the 13th of August there was a scour of a little over 6 feet at that particular point. The zero on the gage has no significance except as a standard for reading the level of the water. It does not mean on the gage, where it reaches zero, that that is the bottom of the bed, but it is a reference point, something that is standard. I took the depth of the water to make up these charts. This particular zero mark has no bearing on the question of those two intervals. was. It shows the amount of scour between those two intervals. I can tell the depth of the water from the charts because I made the soundings there. For instance, if I had a gage height of 14.4 feet and the sounding at that particular time at that particular point was 14.2, the difference is two- tenths of a foot, which gives me something of a basis for locating my points. For instance, on July 30, 1929, I can tell you the depth of the water was 8.6 feet at that point. On August 13th the depth of the water was 14.2 feet. To measure these depths I used a 100 pound weight on the end of the regular cable that was used by the engineer in making 3832 discharge measurements. I took the measurements from the cable car, |
