Show Record river. 3848 According to my observation of the river there is more solid matters in suspension in the river when a flood is on than at other times, and as the river rose the solid content increased. on the date when the highest peak shown on Exhibit 497 occurred 3849 the percentage of silt content was something like 12 percent. The 40 percent solid content occurred on September 21st. That is not shown on this chart. I did not put that on the chart because it was a period of two or three days, and I drew the chart up to show a period of 10 or 15 days, and I thought it was more representative than just to show one large flood. I thought the chart was more representative because it included about two weeks, while the other period was only two or three days of the highest water and silt. I am sure that my foot did not slip when I took that 40 percent sample. 3850 I took the depths during the period that I was making the observation. I lowered the sampling device to the bottom of the river to find out how deep it was, then I returned the sampling de-vice to the surface by a windlass and cable and immediately lowered the sampling device and took the sample. I took my depths first and my samples after. The weight that I raised and lowered by the wind- 3851 lass when I took the depths weighed 100 pounds. I do not think that weight when it was let down to the bottom of the river causedquite a commotion in stirring up the silt 3852 and mud at the bottom of the river. I had no way of making such an observation. I do not recall whether I had any information on that 3853 subject at the time. I do not entertain the opinion that the process of lowering that 100 pound weight to the bottom of the river and then raising it up would tend to stir up the silt and make my samples much muddier than they otherwise would be, because of the fact that the river was 3854 so turbulent of itself that it would do much more to make this cond-ition than by the mere dropping or lowering of the weight. It was not my opinion that the river was so muddy that it |
