Show Record grounded at no place. There was swift water. The boats were kept as far as possible in the quiet water. In that section there were no rapids, only very small riffles. The boats really did no ground at any place, until after we passed the mouth of Moon Light Creek. There was one portage necessary at a rapid at mile 77.5. There the equipment was portaged around the rapid and the boats were taken 3735 through empty. I encountered a rapid at mile 124. The boats went through without any difficulty though. The next place where there was swift current was at the Narrows. There was a little rise in the river and the water was so rough that we feared the boats would be overturned if the seven members of the party would get into all the boats. By noon the river had run down sufficiently for the boats to go through safely. By " run down sufficiently" I mean the crest of the little flood had passed. 3736 There was another place where a boat struck a boulder in the rapid and was cracked from end to end. That rapid was at mile 82.7. The mileage is from the mouth of the San Juan. Of 3737 course there were numerous little rapids all along. I think most of the rapids that I run into are marked on this map which is included in my report. 3740 I do not believe I would make any distinction between a riffle and a rapid. I think a rapid is an especially swift stretch of water where there is a perceptible fall, and also where the water is fairly rough, much rougher than in the adjacent portions of the 3742 stream. I have not used the tern riffle. Some people use the word 3743 " riffle" for a small rapid. I use the word " rapid" to cover such things as that. I intend it to cover everything that is worse than real swift water. Perhaps when I use the word " rapid" I include what some people term " riffles". The points at which I encountered rapids, according to my definition are at mile posts 124, 122.5, 121.9, 121.6, 118.2, 3744 113.7, 98.5, 95.2, 94.7, 93, 92.7, 89.1, 88.7, 84.6, 83.3, 82.7, 82.4, 80.4, 78, 77.5, 76.9, 74.6, 71, 70.4, 21.5, 21.4, 21, |
