Show Record row boats. We uses the largest flat bottom boat for the purpose 3602 of carrying the household goods and equipment and supplies, and we rode the cows a part of the way in it. The row boats followed the big boat. The last time we loaded the cows on the boat we took them clear to the point of destination. 3603 I made arrangements with the Wheeler boys to meet me at my point of destination with horses. The boats that were taken down were kept by Mr. Valentine for his own use down there. It was about 50 miles by horseback the way we went back, and much longer by the river. Homer J. Hite testified on re- direct examination as follows: We could not have taken the scow up stream. The result of my investigation at Richardson with reference to a boat was that we could not get down with a boat. 3605 John P. Hite testified for complainant on direct examination as follows: I am 73 years old. I live near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I am custodian of an apartment house there. I lived in the Territory 3606 of Utah at different points a good many years. I left St. Louis and arrived at Greenriver early in December, 1888. I went from there down to the Colorado Rive where Hite is now. They called it " Dandy Crossing" then. Mr. Homer Hite was in the party. I have head him detail the trip from Greenriver down to Hite and it corresponds with my recollection. I am a brother of Cass Hite. 3607 Since 1888 with the exception of pretty near a year in Arizona, I have spent my time in and along the Colorado River. I left Salt Lake City the second day of September, 1925, and I have not been back since. While in and around Hite I worked with my brother in placer mining and different work. I was post- master down there. I succeeded my nephew and was post- master until the office was abandoned, July 1st, 1914. 509 |
