Show Record Piue Farms. There is a wide open country there at Piute Farms extending from Clay Hill Crossing down to Spencer Camp, a distance 3778 of about 20 miles. In that stretch of 20 miles the channel of the river is more of less permanent, but the depth of the water varies from time to time in that particular portion of the channel. That whole stretch of the river from Moon Light to the mouth of the river, in low water, is such that a boat will ground. I mean from time to time in going down the river you may get grounded. In 3779 going up or down the river in low water the boat would ground. The stretch from Moon Light Creek to Piute Creek is where we had most of our difficulty with shallow water. From Moon Light Creek to Clay Hill Crossing there is a box canyon with vertical walls, 3780 and the canyon is not accessible, except by a boat, between mile 59 and Moon Light Creek. The nearest up stream that a person can get into the river overland is at Slick Horn Gulch. I would not say it was open country in that box canyon. Whether that stretch from the lower and of that box canyon down to Piute Creek is open country, depends on the definition of open country. There is open country beginning at Clay Hill Crossing and extending to about mile 53, where there is a shallow box canyon extending down to about mile 51. From that point on to mile 46 there is open country. From 3781 46 to 43 1/ 2 there is a shallow box canyon, the canyon walls are low. From mile 43 there is open country down to Johns Camp. There is open country between Johns Camp and a place near the mouth of Nokai. Then from Johns Camp there is a restriction in the high canyon wall extending almost to Spencer Camp. At Spencer Camp there is a short stretch of open country that extends from about a mile 377.5 to about 38.5. Then from about 37.5 to the Great Bend, there is a narrow canyon which is practically inaccessible except by boat, 3782 That extends on down to about 27. From mile 27 down to Piute Creek, mile 21.5, it is open country on the cast side of the river. Mr. Loper and I left at the mouth of Piute Creek to go back to Spencer Camp to get the cache of supplies. That was at low water stage. After leaving in our boat with the supplies and |
