Show Record I have boated all of the Colorado River from the mouth 3608 of the Dirty Devil to Lees Ferry and back. I made one round trip and two trips down. I made my first trip to Lees Ferry with Stanton. I recall we were at Lees Ferry New Year's day of 1900, and we started back up. We went down in row boats. We had three boats. In the party there were six of us. Mr. Stanton had located the river channel from the mouth of Fremont River to Lees Ferry. He had a lot of men at three dif-ferent points doing assessment work, and we made that trip partly 3609 for the purpose of posting notices of proof of labor done. He also wanted to bring back a gasoline launch that he had at Lees Ferry. By locating the channel, I want he had located the bars on each side in his location, including the channel of the river. He was getting ready to put in a large dredge, which he did after 3610 this trip. On the trip down to Lees Ferry there were a number of rapids. Commencing below Hite, the only rapids of any consequence were the Trachyte rapid, next the Big Rock rapid and Tickaboo No. 1 and 2 rapids. There was one at Smiths Fork that was very shallow. We had to get out going down and drag our boat a ways. The next one was the Bullfrog rapids, below Hanson Creel, and then there was one they called " Jocko Rapids", but it is not swift water; we had to have a man get out and wade and lead the boat and feel his way to 3611 find the channel. It was in the winter when the river is naturally very low. Below there you will find rapids at the mouth of each stream that comes in. At the mouth of Escalante River you will find more or less of a rapid, but it is not a bad rapid by any means. The Aztec and Trachyte rapids were two of the worst between Lees Ferry and Hite. After the Aztec rapids there is one right after the 3612 crossing of the Faters. They call it the Last Chance rapid. We encountered sand bars below the mouth of the San Juan. The river was low. The sand bars were not moving. We went down in some keel bottom boats that Stanton had |
