Show Record deep water. The other side was a straight bank. It dropped off suddenly. I would not say how deep the channel was, but it was too 3595 deep to wade at that time. I wanted to get on the other side to get to Moab, to get down the river to prospect. We had to follow along the bank on the side of the stream because it was the only 3596 way of getting down there, there was no trail or wagon road. We happened to go to Cisco on this trip get down to the trail leading to Richardson post- office. We left Greenriver with the idea of going to Cisco and getting saddle horses to take 3597 us down to Richardson. My objective was Moab. I was going down to inspect placer bars or claims that belonged to some people in Salt Lake and Greenriver who sent me down there to examine those claims. I was on my way to see certain specific claims and make a report on them. The first claim was located about 30 miles below Cisco. We did not get saddle horses. They were all gone to 3598 their summer camps in the mountains with stock. We were expecting to get our saddle horses at Cisco to go to Richardson. The rest of it we anticipated making by boat. I saw no boats at all on that trip except the one that I swam out to get to take my pardner in until I got to Moab. I do not recall that there was any boat avail-able, even if I desired to use a boat. I did not take any material along to build a boat. We would have taken a boat to go down in but we could not get one. We intended to get horses at Cisco to ride to Richardson and we expected to get a boat from there on down. We made investigation at Richardson to see whether there was a boat 3600 there or not, but there was none. On the trip I made on the Green River in 1892 or 1893, I would not attempt to approximate the distance I went below Green-river. It was a slow trip down. I do not know that the place we went to is now known as Valentine was, Mr. Valentine, his son, there daughters and two grand- daughters. One grand- daughter was about twelve and the other was about seven. All of those people did not ride in the boat I have mentioned. The women and children were in 508 |
