Naples, ]783. It is the stomach of the Bulla lignaria which he has thus converted into an animal. GtoRNA (M. P. ), a Piedmontese naturalist, professor at Tua·in, bom 1741, died 1809. GMELIN (Samuel Theophilus), born at Tubingen 1743, a German naturalist and traveller in the service of Russia, from 1768 to 177 4, at which period he died in Persia. His travels were published in German, 4 vols 4to. Petersburg, 1770-1784. They abound in valuable articles on Natural History. GM.-GMELIN (John Frederic), Professor of Chemistry at Gottingen, born at Tubingen in 1748, died in 18 The author of the thirteenth and last edition of the " Systema Naturm" of Lin· nreus. His work, notwithetanding the ignorance of things, want of judgment and crudity that it exhibits, is still necessary, as being the only tolerably complete ac-count of what had been done down to 1790.
