CRUSTACEA, ARACHNIDES, AND INSECTA: OR ARTIOULA TED ANIMALS WITH ARTICULATED FEET. INSECTA. ORDER VI. ORTHOPTERA( I). In the Insects of this order, partly confounded by Linnams with the Hemiptera, and reunited by Geoffroy to the Coleoptera, but as a particular division, we :find the body generally less indurated than in the latter, and soft, semi-membranous elytra furnished with nervures, which, in the greater number, do not join at the suture in a straight line. Their wings are folded longitudinally, most frequently in the manner of a fan, and divided by membranous nervures running in the same direction. The maxillre are always terminated by a dentated and horny piece covered with a galea, an appendage corresponding to the exterior division of the maxillre of the Coleoptera. They have also a sort of tongue or epiglottis. VoL IV.-A (1) The Ulonata, Fab. |
