Show CHURCH OF CHRIST (Bible and Book of Mormon Teachings) . :Mistakes are always on the part of man. GOD DOES NOT MAKE MISTAKES. He has all wisdom, all knowledge, light and understanding. He never needs to change a law or rectify an error. We are the ones who make mistakes and FAIL TO DE PEND UPON THE WORD OF GOD. In a. recent article written by the .. resident of the R. L. D. S. Church (Saints' Herald, Jan. 17, 1955), we find the statement, "MISTAKES SHOULD NOT FETTER". He is writing on sec tions 109 and 110 of the Doctrine and Covenants, concerning a revelation given by Joseph Smith on baptism for the dead. His article says this "was intended as a letter only and not as a revelation for adoption and approval by the church," but sec tion 110:7 says, ..... the DOCTRINE (baptism for the dead) WHICH IS COMMANDED YOU IN THE REVELATION CON TAINED IN THE LETTER WHICH I WROTE TO YOU." Thus we see plainly that this is not just a letter we are deal ing with, but a purported revelation, which claims God's auth ority ("Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you concerning your dead"-section 109:5), and sanction. IT SHOULD BE ACKNOW LEDGED THAT THE DOCTRINE of baptism for the dead IS FALSE and that the revelation is of man instead of God, but to hide behind the fact that is only a letter, instead of confessing the falseness of the revelation is only to add mistake to mis take and thus STILL BE FETTERED. We should go further and also acknowledge BEFORE GOD AND MAN that many other errors and false teaching's have fet tered Latter Day Saints, SUCH AS, working after death, a prison house where people hear the gospel after death, "glories" or dif ferent degrees of heaven, a Trinity, man's inherent goodness, salvation by works instead of grace, baptism of children, etc. All these false teachings are found in the same book as baptism for the dead (the Doctrine and Covenants) and were given by the same author through the same means, purporting' revelations. None of these doctrines are taught in the Bible or Book of Mormon-and at no time has God had to retract or drop any of the teachings that are contained in these two books. Only when we are built upon the truth are we free and our fetters gone. No, mistakes should not fetter us, THEY SHOULD BE ACKNOWLEDGED AND FORSAKEN. "FOR EVER, 0 LORD, THY WORD IS SETTLED IN HEA VEN." "EVERY WORD OF GOD IS PURE: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. ADD THOU NOT UNTO HIS WORDS, lest he reprove thee, and TH'OU BE FOUND A LIAR." "But the WORD OF THE LORD ENDURETH FOR EVER." (Ps. 119:89, Provo 30:5-6, and 1 Pct. 1:25). "Yea, we see that whosoever will LAY HOLD UPON THE WORD OF GOD WHICH IS QUICK AND POWERFUL, which SHALL DIVIDE asunder ALL the cunning, and the snares, and the wiles of thedevil, and LEAD the man of CIll'ist in a straight and narrow course across the everlasting gulf of misery which Is prepared to engulf the wicked, and LAND THEIR SOULS, yea. their immortal souls, at the right hand of God, in the kingdom of heaven, to sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and with Jacob, and with all our holy fathers, to go no more out."
