Teeth 42; false grinders jj^ ; sectorial ^ ; molars ^ ; the upper and lower premolars acutely dentated on the front and, especially, on the hinder edge; upper sectorial teeth strong, elongate, trigonal, broad, with a small but well-marked interior lobe in front. First upper tubercular tooth large, with a broad rounded internal lobe; the second upper tubercular oblong transverse, much smaller ; lower hinder tubercular very small, cylindrical. This group is intermediate between the Hyaena and the Dog. The manner of copulation is said to be different from the Dog's, and similar to that of the Hysena. 1. LYCAON VENATICUS. Simur or Mebbra.
