A cJ 878 single story adobe structure was expande~£t its~uth s~ e ~ 19 ~bY the addition of a complete two story foursquare house type with Colon~~k8~e-eT~m~K\\s. :rhis early twentieth century architectural type was a rejection of the complex, assymetrical compositions of the Victorian era. It looks back to the Classical geometric, symmetrically balanced structures of the early Mormon settlers. The foursquare was a popular house type in Utah from 1900 to 1920.' Nettie was John's third wife. He married three additional wives during the time Nettie owned the house in Farmington; Eliza Roxie Welling and Rhoda Welling in 1901 and Ellen Georgina Sandberg in 1909. John was known as "The Champion of Plural Marriage" and even though the LOS church abandoned the concept in 1890, he continued to marry and practice the principle.
