Show Record boat of the character used by us on one river as on the other, and there would probably have been no more difficulty in going up to the mouth of the San Rafael with the large Moab boat than was experienced by us in going up the Colorado. The San Rafael 295 carries about 10 or 15 second feet of water. I made no mention in my report of navigation except as it was defending the bed of the river; it was not a navigation report in any sense. I do refer in the report to the crossing bars, to difficulties of various kinds in navigation, for instance, finding the channel, rough water, necessity for careful handling of the boats, etc., but merely as an indication of the description and character of the 296 river. On page 75 of my report I refer to submerged rocks and state that we had got stuck on sand bars. I would say that the 297 common channel depths at the bends between bars range from three 298- 299 to five feet rather than three feet. I knew that the sole purpose of our trip was to bring back facts from observation up and down 300 the stream. My report is a technical report as to the character-istics of the river and river bed and I am not a navigator. Of course I have put in the report one or two places that the boat got stuck, and from a technical viewpoint perhaps they might better have been left out, except as they show the character of the bed of the river. That is the only explanation I care to make as to why no more mention in my report was made about being stuck on sand bars. The same boats, loaded and propelled in the same way, would have about the same type of sailing and would encounter about the same difficulties on the Green as on the Colorado River when going from the mouth of the San Rafael to the town of Moab; I would say that it would be as easy to go up and down on one of the 301 rivers as on the other between those limits. I know that navigation is more difficult between the mouth of the San Rafael and the town of Green River. There was no difficulty in finding the channel along the last mentioned stretch of river, and I am sure that |
