Show 80 mile and lined the boats through that distance. On the second occasion we carried our load and lined the boats for a distance of practically a mile. On the next occasion the same thing was done for approximately three quarters of a mile. On the fourth occasion the same thing was done for a distance not exceeding a quarter of 81 a mile. There were only four instend of five such occasions. The matter of lining boats is a procedure well known to boatman in 86 - 87 river travel. I think Rapid No. 22, where I saw the hole, with Rapid No. 23 so close below it, at that stage of water, would be about the worst in Cataract Canyon. No. 5 would also be bad. 89 - 90 Dark Canyon is a bad rapid, but I have no picture of that. Before leaving the town of Green River I learned what the water gauge indde ated. The 119,000 second feet I spoke of as being the flow of the river at the time of the flood referred to by me was what I understood to be the gauge reading at Lee's Ferry. Between the town of Green River and Lee's Ferry many streams flow into the river, including the San Juan and the Colorado River itself. I be-lieve the gauge reading at Lee's Ferry was 127,000 second feet and that in giving 119,000 second feet the water from the san Juan, which is the second largest tributary of the Colorado, was sub-tracted, the 119,000 representing the second feet estimated to be 91 flowing in Cataract Canyon. I would not be positive that the 119,000 second feet represented the gauge reading at Lee's Ferry after deducting the flow of the San Juan. My chief recollection 92 is the way the water came up that night. Our trip was hurried, al-though we made occasional excursions up a side canyon and in going through Labyrinth Canyon we climbed to the rim. Clyde L. Eddy testified on redirect examination as follows: 93 Our expedition continued to Needles, California, and the entire river trip consumed six weeks. At Lee's Ferry we took on new supplies, which came overland from Kanab, and again at Grand 94 Canyon, on the Santa Fe railroad, we took on supplies. It would be - 13- 1128 |
