Show Clyde L. Eddy testified on cross examination as follows: 75 Except the rapid water that we came to about eight miles below the town of Green River, which was quite rapid, the first rapid water encountered by us was at what I have termed No. 76 1 Rapid, shown on Exhibit 25. The other rapid water encountered before reaching Rapid No. 1 in Cataract Canyon was at a point about eight miles below the town of Green River, where, as I have testified, there was a sudden turn in the river. We got safely through that turn with all three boats. No member of the party had ever been along the river before with the exception of Parley Galloway. After going through Cataract Canyon we had easy going 77 on down to the Arizona- Utah line. There are comparatively few streams that in the course of fifty miles do not have riffles and more or less rapid water, and through the stretch of river between Cataract Canyon and the Arizona- Utah line we encountered no difficu-lties or impediments. " Easy going" is a relative term and there were two rapids that we would call easy rapids in that stretch, but we experienced no difficulty. Rapid water may mean simply fast-flowing water, but when you come to rapids you have a sudden sharp drop, there may be rocks in the way, and you have to steer with great care. At places in the Grand Canyon our boats tilted and 78 tipped so that we chipped some water. At two places between Cataract Canyon and Lee's Ferry the water is of such character that I would not term it a typically easy stretch of water there. We got through there without any mishaps, and neither I not any other man experienced in boating would have any hesitation in going over these two places. From the town of Green River to the Utah- Arizona state line the only difficulty we encountered was at the places I have been asked about on my cross examination and in Cataract Canyon. In going through Cataract Canyon we lined our 79 boats at five different rapids. On the first occasion when we lined our boats we carried our load a half or three quarters of a - 12- 1127 |
