Show Record 232 Green there are two or three flats of a total acreage of from 500 to 1000 acres - nearer 500 acres - that night be irrigated and farmed. By examination between Court House Wash and Castle Creek was made by automobile. The river there changes materially, taking on more the characteristics of a mountain stream, the rapids being numerous and large rocks being exposed in the channel. Each side wash brings down a great amount of debris, which has formed 233 rapids. These conditions obtain starting in at about Mile 68, near the mouth of Sheep Creek, which is about three miles above the Moab bridge. Between Mile 68 and Castle Creek, which is at Mile 79, the river is much deeper than down below. There are rapids with a fall of one to three or four feet and no longer any 234 quiet water. Channel conditions on the Colorado are very nearly the same as those on the Green but more crossing bars are observed on the Colorado than on the Green and the Colorado is straighter than the Green. The windings of the river account largely for the crossing bar conditions. The fact that the Colorado carries more 235 sediment may account for its having more crossing bars. I think I made a mistake when I stated that there were 4900 second feet of water between October 18 and October 23; I should have said 3900 second feet, although the official records will speak for themselves. 235- 240 Exhibit No. 80, entitled " Rapids, Rapid Water and Quiet Water", was received in evidence " as a compilation of figures; but so far as the effects of the figures are characterized, it is only admissible to the extent that he ( the witness) himself had then been on the spot and has given his views as to that spot." 241 Where in exhibits prepared by me I have used the word " head", it is intended to indicate the difference in elevation above and below the riffle; for instance, if I say that a head of three feet will be created in a distance of a thousand feet, I mean that the surveys show that there was an actual fall of three feet in that distance.
