Show Record rain fall down during that time. Between Green River, Utah, and the confluence of the two rivers, we ran on sand bars. We saw no other boats or people. At one place in Labyrinth or Stillwater Canyon, I wanted to run ashore, but the water was so swift that I landed perhaps a quarter of a mile below where I intended to land. 52 The water was so muddy that when we drank it our canteens would get full of dirt and it was necessary to settle the water for a few minutes in the canteen, and we had trouble to keep our teeth from gritting until the sand had washed out of our mouths. We had no trouble with waves on the Green River except at the place mentioned where the current pushed diagonally across to the other 53 side. Exhibit No. 25 was taken 3 1/ 2 miles below the junction of the 54 two rivers. Exhibit No. 25 is a photograph of Rapid No. 1 in Cataract Canyon. We ran that rapid, getting through very nicely. Exhibit No. 27 shows the river between Rapids Nos. 1, 2 and 3. I photographed it simply because it was the first rough water that we had come to and it was typical. We ran the rapid shown in that 55 picture. Exhibit No. 28 is a photograph showing the lining of one of the large boats around the upper part of Rapid No. 5. In lining a boat we had long lines on the bow and also on the stern; then we would jockey the boats down along the shore. It would be necessary to have men on both the bow line and the stern line and also out in the river to lift the boat over and push it around 56 and out and past the rocks along the shore. Exhibit No. 29 is another picture showing the lining of boats. The weight of the water makes it a dangerous operation. The water carries so much sand and silt that it would fill up a man's pockets so that he 57 would have to cut them off. Our major difficulty was in lining boats. Exhibit No. 30 is a photograph of a hole knocked in our small boat when we were lining it. This boat had eight patches 58 on it when we finally finished the trip. Exhibit No. 31 is a photograph of the fifth bad rapid encountered in Cataract Canyon. It is the same rapid as that shown in Exhibits Nos. 26 and 9, only |
