Show Cougar, Canada lynx, Black bear, Wolverine, Bobcat, Red Fox, Coyo Although some are rare, ail species are still observed. te Since only general habitat needs on the Uintas are known, current logging and associated road developments, and non- primitive recreation emphasis of the Forest Service, are taking place in complete disregard of these species. To add impacts from CUP developments such as damming Rock Creek and Whiterocks Canyons and developing reservoir recreation, compounds the loss of the essential isolation and primitive qualities required by many species. Upper Whiterocks River, Reader Lakes, the Dry Fork drainages, and the Queant Lake area are especially vulnerable from increasing recreation uses. The Forest Service helped create a local market for lodge-pole pine timber and is now systematically opening up the remaining large blocks of untouched Forest. No ultimate perspective of wildlife balance is determined - greater or lesser benefits from series of vegetative succession with roads.versus unaltered Forests minus roads, « - the best evaluation of territorial uses and requirements is needed: habitat types and locations - some estimate of numbers of species existing and status of populations - adequacy of prey species - seasonal sufficiencies - limiting factors; actions needed - values " direct, Indirect and cumulative Impacts from CUP developments - mitigation proposed; criteria*; adequacy. These species are generally considered to be irretrievable losses. Smaller Furbearers: Beaver, Muskrat, Rodents, Hares and Rabbits» Kaccoon,Porcupine, Fisher, Marmot, Pica, Squirrels, Pine Marten, Otter Only generalized information is available although the State Division of Wildlife Resources recently Instituted a small mammal department to assess these resources in the State. A species list has been prepared by the DWR for the CUP Upalco and Uintah Units; BLM prepared a list for the Jensen Unit; b u t i*gtAHed habitat requirement studies are lacking. Although the Uinta Range South Slopes topography is more varied with canyons, cliffs, vast cirque basins, talus slopes, meadows, alpine tundra and high elevation wetlands , little has been ~ done to relate species to specific habitat types. Wildlife interrelationships - predator to prey, i.e. Canada lynx to hare, Golden eagle and other raptors to prey, Cougar to elk or deer - have not been determined on the Range although these are vital for species perpetuation. A Wasatch Forest - Utah State University three year habitat study on the North Slope, evaluated small animal and bird use of stages of vegetative succession from old and new logging and fire. Whether Pine marten forest habitat will be recognized in timber sales is questionable. Even when the data is there, wildlife |
