M: I mean, the membership, are they still active ... • ffi: Oh yes, there are a lot of young people they have been hiring a lot of young guys, the ones that started working in 1942 are all getting old and retire, so they hired like 2 or 3 hundred young guys from 18 to 30, they all keep up with the Union. H: Do you think the younger Chica nos, or Mejicanos or what ever, are they still going into the mines as much as they were before, or are they trying to find other types of work? MR: Well. . they can find different jobs, but still a lot of them quit the job and go in the mines, because the pay in the mines is real good, they make about $40 a day, and sometimes more, you know, if they work on Saturday they make about $60, they work on Sunday they make about $80. They get a lot of overtime, too. The pay in the mines is been good, and then the benefits: welfare, pension, doctors. You can get the best hospital in the world and it don't cost you a penny, cover you and your family, you are covered . You have good benefits, you get your |
