Show INTERVIEW: Mrs. E. Garcia Page 26 AG: No. Sometimes I go once in a while, but not very often. BM: You have heard of the Chicano movement, what do you think of the word, Chicano? AG: Chicano, well ... we didn't used to hear that word before, just once in a while. JG: What did it mean then, Chicano? What did Chicano mean when you used it? AG: Chicano, well, we just didn't like that word before. JG: Why? AG: I don't know. why, I don't know, some people say that's a bad word. BM: What does it mean to you now that it is used a lot? AG: Chicano, I don't like it, we are used to Mexican-American because that's what we are, Mexicans. We never used that word before, not even when I was in school. KT: So, it was a bad word, when you used it then? AG: It was. BM: And now it's the younger generation. AG: Yes, the younger generation. BM: Have you heard of Corky Gonzalez? He is in Denver, he is with the crusador of juatice, he is working in the Chicano Movement there, and then Cesar Chavez? AG: Chavez, yes I hear of him. |
