Show ShooreDobbsRumelSTRING QUARTET"Music that gentlier on the spirit lies,Than tir'd eyelids upon tir'd eyes ..." So the poet said of music and in no better way can the quieter emotion of reverie be expressed than through the soft, mellow tones of stringed instruments. This idea was played upon first when a few years ago a group of talented young musicians were selected from the school orchestra to form the varsity string quartet. This beginning has lead to an organization which has each year bestowed the honor upon four of the finest instrumental artists of the school. In the spring the quartet was presented by the music department at a concert given in Kingsbury hall. The feature was later repeated at Ogden. The last appearance was made when they played for the Baccalaureate Services at the close of the school year. At this concert a high standard of excellence was reached in their performance. The members of the quartet were Isa-dore Shoore, first violin; Ray Rumel, second violin; Lorna Van Cott, viola; and A^irginia Dobbs, cello. Professor Arthur Freber was the director.MUSICAL ARTISTSSince the completion of Kingsbury Hall, the Musical Arts Society, although not an organization of the University of Utah, has drawn a large part of its audiences from those on the campus who follow the trends of modern music, drama, and art.Of the five musical performances presented in connection with the society, the first was given by Albert Shepherd from Salt Lake. This violinist's skill in producing exquisite music on his instrument made the audience proud to know that he was Utah's own musician. The next event was the presentation of the Liebeslieder Ensemble in January. In February, the Musical Arts Society presented Vladimir Horowitz, one of the leading members of the modern school of young pianists. The audience was deeply impressed by his technique. Gregor Piatigorsky was heard in March. This cellist proved his unusual abilities in technique and expression as exhibited in Bach's Suite in C-Major. The last musical artist to come to Salt Lake was Ignace Paderewski, the pianist, one of the greatest musicians of all time.145 |
