Show TRACK CAPTAINSNathan LongV! *•• r IllllSplllfllA^ tf1 1But ,k GrantUTAH'S FIRST TRACK TITLENurtured on brilliant dual victories and a smashing state championship victory, the Utes at last came into their own and sped to a 57^2 point victory over the best competition the conference could produce which happened to be Colorado University with 46 points.Again that famous trio of Redskin scalptakers-Nate Long, Buck Grant, and Jack Squires-were the mighty sachems in Utah's initial victory. The versatile Grant not only walked off with high point honors -14 in all-but in so doing excelled the best performances of the year made in the United States wThen he leaped 6 feet 3% inches for a new conference record. His expected rhythmic victory in the high hurdles and second in the broad jump helped to account for his most brilliant all-around performance.Long ground out a victory in the 440 but not in the fast time of the week before. He was pressed all the way by De-Vere Wootton, his team mate, who gained a close second. Long was nosed out by Haynes, Denver flash, in the 220 yard dash.Captain Squires failed to show the speed which smashed the mile and half-mile conference records at Logan the week before but it was sufficient to gain him first in the mile and second in the half-mile run.The Redskin quartet of fast-moving 440 men, Wootton, Clayton, Jeppson, and Long, contributed a brilliant race in taking the mile relay. Sherman Clark, Grey Lusty, Loraine Cox, Jack Bennett, and Sterling Beesley contributed the remainder of Utah's points in the other events.By gaining the track championship, Utah succeeded in practically monopolizing conference athletics in 1930; and again repeated this year, winning titles in football, basketball, swimming, tennis, and probably track.225 |
