Caldwell, President of the Alumni Association, announced at an annual banquet of the Association that the next project should be a Union Building for the University of Utah, he was greeted with applause but was immediately and openly charged that the announcement was made simply to get publicity. The same thought had been: in the minds of the students themselves some months previous to this, and following a suggestion by Mr. Junior Rich, President of the A. S. U. U. the project was initiated in February, 1922, through a one dollar campus drive which netted about $1,100that provided the nucleus of the Union Building Fund.About the same time the A. S. U. U. constitution was amended to provide a fee of $2.50 per student, which added about $5,000 per year to the fund. The committee in charge of the drive set the final goal at $500,000 and continued its efforts both on and off the campus, during 1924-25-26 bringing the fund up to $210,000. Out of courtesy to the stadium, campaign efforts were suspended during 1926-27 but the monentum of previous activities served to bring the total fund up to $240,000.Union Building takes form¦10 |
