Show Before the Salt Lake High School GameCoach Dale PittTHE second season of Utah's Freshman football team was a marked success. Dale Pitt, former crimson football and track star, piloted that squad through a hard season against big odds to a prosperous ending. It is a big, and oftentimes, a discouraging task to attempt to finish a season with a large squad; yet Dale did it. He has tact and gallons of that good fighting spirit, which he pours into all his men. With Coach Pitt it is that "get there" spirit continually. The Freshman Football Season of 1911THE Freshman football season, while somewhat limited as to games, was very successful in the one respect of developing men for the "U" squad.Numerous members of the squad handled the football for the first time, and only through the extreme efforts of Coach Pitt and the consistency of these players were they rounded into such form as to enable them to defeat a team which earlier in the season had run up score of 26 to 0.Several members of the team distinguished themselves as stars. Capt. Goodspeed at left half-back, besides being a power on defense, was always good for ten or twenty yards through any one of the opposing teams' lines, and his coolness and clean playing were continually in evidence; Miller at smashing end shows signs of a bright future in the football line; Tolman at guard could always account for his opponent; Warthman at end was very effective on offense; McCarty at quarterback ran off the plays with lots of snap and ginger; and Jones, Young, Titus and King also showed great ability. The scores were as follows:Granite ................................................ 5Ogden ................................................26Salt Lake High School......18Ogden ................................................... 3Freshmen .......................................¦.-.. 11Freshmen .......................................... 0Freshmen .......................................... 0Freshmen ..........................................10197 |
