Show The Basketball SeasonOI COACH FRED BENNIONHISTORY repeated itself in the basket ball season of 1912. Since the introduction of the game at the "U," we have won every game played with the Y. M. C. A. and A. C. U., but have lost every game played with the B. Y. U. There are, however, certain important facts that stand out to make this year's season very successful. That the "U" team work was superior to that of any team in the league is admitted, even by the Provo champions. ConsideringA U. of U. Player and an A. C. Rooterthe brevity of the season, the showing of the team was very creditable. Basket ball superiority in this State is found in those schools in which it is the major sport and the practice season covers a long period. The B. Y. U. have no fall sport and consequently begin practicing long before the University men who are playing football until Thanksgiving. As a result, the Provo men became phenomenal basket throwers and thus offset our superb team work. If we hope to overcome this defect, a class of athletes must be trained in the "gym" during the fall months, while the gridiron warriors are battling on the sodded field.Capt. Erickson played his usual brilliant game, his intercepting and passing being features of every game. Lon Romney started out the season in whirlwind fashion, playing great ball, but was very unfortunately injured in a so-called basket ball game at Logan. Happy proved himself to be the best all-round basket performer in the State, for he played at guard, forward, and center. In the final game, he scored five field goals over close-guarding Greenwood. O. Romney's accurate basket shooting and general aggressive floor work were of high order. Jerry Knowlton certainly deserves much credit for the rapid progress he made in the game this year. At Provo he shut out the star forward, Weight, and scored a basket over him. Evans played a wonderful game against the Aggies, but had to leave school on account of the illness of his father. His loss was keenly felt. Udy and Abbott, plucky, heady, and speedy, demonstrated that they are of 'Varsity caliber and will be heard from another year. The GamesU. of U., 37; Y. M. C. A., 25.
