Show Miscellaneous AthleticsContinuedTennisInterest in tennis was greatly stimulated by the organization of a tennis club last year. The club held a tournament open to its members and although no stars were discovered, the matches showed close competition and some little skill. George Mercer Stout finally earned the racquet offered by the club to the tournament winner. Plans are already formulated for the establishment of an additional court for future tournaments. Those interested in tennis have succeeded in including the sport in the intercollegiate activities.Rifle ClubThe recently organized rifle club is gladly welcomed into the sporting ranks. Membership in the Intercollegiate Rifle League of the United States should add greatly to Utah's reputation.New GymnasiumThe Athletic Council is working for the time, when Professor Bolin may have a gymnasium restricted to the use of his classes. Then the present "gym" will be turned over exclusively to athletics. This move is expected to increase interest in the minor sports and to bring about the introduction of indoor baseball, swimming, bowling and "gym" team competition.Women's AthleticsWe are informed that, although they perform behind closed doors and darkened windows, the women of the University engage with great proficiency in indoor baseball, basketball, ring hockey, sprinting, and jumping. Regent Frank B. Stephens should be pleased to learn that these sports are sharing with dancing the athletic interest of the women.166 |
