Show UTOjoined the refrain of those by whom the spectacle first was seen, swelled the chorus of the north, and grew to such grand volume in the city of Salt Lake, that strangely, the yearning was felt and the stars magically enlightened that city, appearing in the early afternoon and shining with clear, strong light until the following dawn.Astronomers were perplexed, indeed amazed at the unusual problem presented by these stars. Various were the solutions and explanations offered by them. "They formed, in position," said one, "a man with arms outstretched."'"On the contrary," said another, "I saw distinctly a tiny bit of a girl bending over somethingshe held in her arms." Many days the discussions lasted, but no agreement could be reached. Only the stars themselves could tell their story of "Arms and the Man" and " 'Op O' Me Thumb"; of chocolate caramels, Beautiful Dolls and nailed shutters, of "our library," "parlor table,"' "electric bell," and roar of the mob; not to speak of "that troublesome shirt." All this they could tell and more; of the splendor of a certain Chocolate Soldier, the beauty of Raina, the coquetry of Louka, the becoming pomposity of Mrs. Petkoff; of an ideal Sergius, a blistering Mr. Petkoff, and an obsequious Nicola. Again could they revel in the artistic pathos of poor little " 'Op O' Me Thumb," the fitting gruffness of Mr. Horace, and the vivacious madame and her efficient laundry help; but alas! quite impossible is this knowledge; the world must forever remain in ignorance, for though stars may shine, they will not speak. |
