Show The "U" MenCaptainLon RomneyHalfbackCaptain-elect Dune GardnerCenteriCapt. Romney was the most brilliant performer on the Rocky Mountain gridiron last fall. His playing- would be a credit to any team in the country. Coach Rothgeb of Colorado College made the remark, after our game, that "there was not another backfield man in the Conference in Romney's class." Dashing', fiery, sometimes taking1 big chances, but almost always making them good, he was a man feared by every opponent. Lon's playing was a big factor in the team's success, but the self-sacrificing1, enthusiastic, never-die spirit with which he practiced and played was the biggest factor of all.No other team that Utah met had so good a center as Gardner. His passing was always accurate; he seldom failed to open up a hole for a quarter back buck; and his strength and ability to cover ground was such that he often outdistanced his team mates in going down under kicks. His value to the team was greatly increased by his ability to play a strong tackle on defense. "Dune" has the qualities that should make him a great leader of the 1912 team.Wid Ashton, FullbackSteady, reliable, watchful, with plenty of speed and power, Ashton could always be depended upon. A consistent ground gainer, a heady passer, a good place kicker, and an accurate punter, he was a very valuable man on the team. It was his ability to place on-side kicks that made it possible for his team mates to recover the ball time after time in the Colorado Col'ege game.Rex Sutherland, HalfbackRex was the wiriest, slipperiest half back in the game. Lithe, strong, fast and heady he was a hard man to get your hands on, and when you did get hold of him, you couldn't throw him down. Although playing1 but half of the C. C. game, he contributed largely to the winning score by running seventy yards through a broken field for the first touch-down. In the latter part of the game he went in at quarter and squeezed through Wither-ow, All Rocky Mountain center, for a thirty yard gain.149 |
