Show Fair Forever 124 Chapter Twenty Three Things Do Change Sunday morning, I sit on the porch and watch for the old man. The bay is filled with boats of all shapes. Sailboats, cruisers, ski boats, even a yacht. But the old man's battered outboard never shows. I'm also holding my cell phone. I still haven't called Katie. I've dialed the number twice, but I always hang up. I've convinced myself she's being nice, reminding me to call. By now, her parent's have helped her with the test and she's likely talking with her real friends about stuff she really cares about. Anything but algebra. Mom sits with me on the porch, reading. If she wonders why I don't go down to the shore and take Fair Forever on the water, she doesn't ask. She's quiet. She might be worrying about her job. She's probably stressed about starting tomorrow. She'll be starting a new life, in a way. |
