Show Fair Forever 118 I turn to see a pink shrimp walking my way, legs dangling from its front in two jiggling rows. The shrimp slips back its hood, revealing a face. It's Katie. "Thanks for sponsoring me, Brad," she says, still breathing hard. "I didn't know until this morning. Twenty dollars! That's a lot!" "No problem," Tsay, looking at my feet. I'm trying not to blush. "Thanks for helping me find the right calculator." "Ugh! Don't remind me. But I've finished all the problems that I could do on my own-on the test, I mean." "Me, too." I study her costume. "Nice .. . legs," Tsay with a grin. She bounces and all her legs bounce as well. . We both laugh. Katie says, "Last year my mom insisted we all dress up like sharks." She rolls her eyes. "I'm okay with it though. We raise more money by dressing up. I love sea turtles, you know." . . ; * . • ' "Me, too," I agree. "Maybe I'll run next year." Katie's eyes open in shock. "Can you run?" she asks, and then she casts her eyes at the sand. "Tmean . . . I didn't know. I mean^ I wasn't sure." A cold silence fills the morning. My mind spins. I want to say that I'd like to run-really like to run-but I'd be willing to walk, especially with a friend. I want to explain that I'm ready to be normal. Ready to join in. But I don't. Someone calls her from the crowd. |
