Show Fair Forever 15 of greeting that makes you feel about as welcome as a sick stomach. He makes a big deal out of me being back, like I'm a celebrity or something. He doesn't mention my heart, but repeats over and over, "You look so healthy!" Everyone stares. First thing, Mr. Keaston holds up a calculator and reminds everyone to have one before the first test on Friday. Next, he drags from behind his desk a long balance made of a thick board and a triangular swivel. He points to the back of the class. "Buddy Evans, would you please come forward and stand on one end of this balance?" A boy constructed mostly of elbows and knees marches forward and stands on the downhill ramp. Mr. Keaston asks," How much do you weigh, Mr. Evans?" Buddy's answer is quiet. "Ninety-six pounds." Somebody laughs, but Keaston doesn't seem to care. I realize I probably weigh less. "AHA!" Mr. Keaston shouts, and Buddy nearly jumps off the board. Keaston slashes a huge 96 on the blackboard with chalk. Broken bits fly in all directions. He points to a pile of pavers tucked in the front comer. Then, pointing to Katie, he says, "Miss Lindstrom, if I were to tell you that each of those pavers weighs four pounds, how many pavers would you need to balance Mr. Evans on that board?" Katie blushes., Her eyes are blank. . A red headed girl on the second row raises her hand and waves it eagerly, the same hand she waved earlier in English and Current Events. "Miss Lindstrom?" Keaston pleads. "I don't know," Katie says quietly. |
