I leave the kitchen and walk toward the shore. The wind is gusting. The waves are angry. The season is changing, I know, arid I'm running out of time. At the landing, I look toward Beacon 9. The man's boat isn't there. Without glancing back, I push my skiff off the beach, jumping inside. I take a stroke with the oars. Immediately, white-capped waves slap the skiff,'spinning me off course. I correct and try to pull harder. Wind blows in sudden, erratic gusts, skewing my course, forcing me north, splashing my back and arms. In the skiff, the waves seem larger, angrier, more dangerous, but I forge ahead, pulling harder.
