Show Fair Forever 78 I look them.over quickly. I can't remember Mom ever buying a new dress. "They both look nice," I say, but without much interest. "You should get them both." She scrunches her forehead. "I couldn't," she breathes. Then, studying the dresses with outstretched arms, she continues her song, humming something that sounds familiar. After a while I interrupt, saying, "That sounds like one of the songs Amanda used to sing." Mom's startled by my comment. She looks up. "That song you were humming. It sounds like one of the songs Amanda sang." "Was I humming? I didn't even know." She folds the dresses and sits down, turning serious. "I'll be working every day, Bradley-Monday through Friday. I'll be leaving early and I won't be home until after school." I don't comment: I'm not sure what to say. "I could drop you off at school in the mornings. It isn't out of the way." I consider the offer, but quickly decline. "I'll try the-bus a little longer." Mom picks up her packages and heads to, her bedroom. I can hear humming again. Closets opening and closing. She returns and cups my face in her hands. "I'll miss watching you leave in the mornings," she says, her eyes turning sad. I pull away. "Okay, then I'll stay horne." She glowers and I laugh. "I'll be okay*" I say. "Anyway, I'll be driving soon." -"Not 'that soon." She shakes her head but her eyes are still sad. She begins to open the mail. Of a sudden she announces, "I'm planning to visit with your teachers tonight.. It's Back-to-School Night, you know." |
