I won't have anyplace to, go once my daughter sells my boat." He runs a weathered hand along the peeling gunwale of his boat. I drop my oars with a splash. "That's not fair!" I protest loudly. Your daughter canT sell your boat, can she? Without your permission?" Hearing the anger in my voice, the old man waits for me to calm. "Afraid so," he whispers. "It's probably time." He pats the engine. "This gal's getting old, too. Like me." "Sell her to me!" My order is sudden and demanding. "Brddleyl" Mom is shocked by my outburst, embarrassed. "How much?" I ask, ignoring her concern. The old guy thinks hard, stroking his chin. "How much have you got?" Mom interrupts, "Now, Bradley- "Forty seven dollars . . . and some change." I'm sitting on the edge of my seat. "I know it isn't enough, but I could pay the rest from my allowance." I turn Fair Forever so my mom is facing away from the old guy, taken out of the bargaining. Mom turns7cranes her neck. She speaks over her shoulder. "Mr. Callister, I'm sorry. Bradley is getting over excited. He doesn't know anything about power boats. Anyway, your daughter has other plans, I'm sure." |
