Show Fair Forever 154 "I'll think about it," I promise. I wait to talk with Katie after school, tell her that maybe I will have a party. Explain about not calling. I find her near the gym. She smiles when she sees me. I'm expecting her to be changed into her cheerleading uniform, but she isn't. "Glad you found me," she says. "Guess what? No practice today. Coach cancelled. If you don't mind, we can start studying for next Friday's test." "Right now?" I glance at my watch. Katie notices. Frowns. "Not if you don't want to." "No! I want t o . . . Now?" Katie's backpack slips off her shoulder. She grabs it, looking perturbed, as well as confused. "I have, an appointment," I explain, calming my voice. "I was supposed to meet with someone yesterday, but the storm got in the way. Mom set a new meeting for today after school!" . "How long?" she asks. "Urn, about an hour, plus the walk." "The walk?", "Yeah. I'm meeting an old guy at the rest home on the bluff I have to finish telling him a story." "A story? Is this something you do? Tell stories at rest homes?" |
