Show Fair Forever 59 She fumbled with the oars. They were long and difficult and they kept slipping in the oarlocks and skimming on top of the water. Jhe skiff spun, first to the right, and then to the left. Amanda laughed. She tried facing forward in the skiff, but she ran into the dock and laughed again. Mom took off her shoes and waded into the water. She motioned for Amanda to turn and face the stern but, when she stood, Amanda almost tipped out. That's when she grabbed Mom around the neck and both started to laugh. Fair Forever bounced like a horse, and they laughed even harder. And then they fell. The skiff went one way and Mom and Amanda went the other, landing with a splash in water to their waists. They sat surprised and drenched and Fair Forever floatedbackto shore. They laughed.as they waded ashore. Mom looked like a kid. They could have been sisters, laughing and giggling and holding hands. I hadn 't seen Mom laugh like that, ever. They laughed all the way back to the house. Then they sat on the screened porch and I could hear mumbles as they talked and waited to dry. Once, I even heard a squeal. It was Mom! Mom never squeals. Later, Amanda climbed the stairs and came wheelchairv saying, 'This is like the wheelchair I gave you in the hospital.'- She looked around my room. 'It won't be much use up here,' she added. I had already figured as much. . She lifted herself in the wheelchair, balancing on the back wheels.
