Show Fair Forever 53 I'm wearing the 5K turtle shirt. I changed into it when I got home. "Don't you just love sea turtles?" she says, grinning. "Aren't they amazing? Did you know they live, like, forever?" . " I d o - " ; . - * • • • . . * "' I wait for Katie to ask another question, but she doesn't. "They'll be holding the 5K race again this weekend," I blurt, glad to have thought of something to say. "I know," she says. "My whole family is going to run." , - / "Wow!" ; . . - Wow? What kind of a dumb comment is Wow? I sound like a fourth, grader. "The money goes to a fund to save the turtles," I explain, and suddenly my face flushes. Katie would know that, of course, since she is running the race. Boy, am I ever smooth with words! . She looks at the floor. "Guess I'll see you in class," I offer. , ' - "Or on the bus." On the way home, I make a stop at the library so I can donate twenty dollars to The Coastal 5K race. The librarian is young, maybe high school age, probably a volunteer. "Who do you want to sponsor?" she asks. I glance down. "Katie Lindstrom." |
