Shepickedup the conch shell and held it to her ear, listening. 'You can hear the ocean,' I said. 'The sound of the waves.' It's what everyone says when they put a shell to their ear. . . . Amanda kept listening, her eyes half-closed. My room fell so quiet you could hear the ticking of my watch, the beating of my heart. Then Amanda said, 'You can hear more than just the waves, Bradley. If you listen close, you can hear the ocean breathing, sighing, whispering her secrets to the waves.' I could see my mom smiling. Amanda placed the shell back on my desk. That's when sine noticed the door to the catwalk. 'Does this go outside?' she asked eagerly. Mom opened the door and Amanda stepped out. Dusk was beginning to fall. With the door open, you could hear the wash of the waves as they curled to shore. 'That's the lighthouse, isn 't it.' Amanda said, pointing north. Mom nodded. - . - ' 'It's so peaceful and hypnotic.' Amanda sighed and leaned against the doorframe. 1'd love to visit it, sometime.' „ 7 / Mom gave a nod of her head. 'Everyone does, " she said. 'But it's closed now. Satellites do the navigation these days. The light is just for show, mostly.' ; Amanda reentered my bedroom and closed the door. Standing motionless, she studied my posters, staring quietly. Then she spoke in a whisper, as if she were revealing a truth. She said, 'Sea turtles are magic, you know. The Great Turtles live forever.' |
