Show "I'm through," said Kim. "But we barely got here." Then she listened for moment to the shouting voices coming from the gymasium. "who's in there?" "T.J. Whipple and some of his friends. They kicked me out. " "How'd they get in?" "I don't know. Probably pried open a window." "They're not suppossed to be in here," said Mrs. Long heading for the gymnsium doors. "Please, Mom," said Kim, grabbing her mother's arm. "Don't chase 'em off. I'd never hear the end of it. I'll just go into the health room and wait for you." When she and her mother arrived at home, Mr. Huskinson had left a note that he had gone into Pocatello to for some supplies. That left only Julene in the house. Kim started down the hall to go upstairs to her room. As she passed by the living room, she glanced in to see Julene sitting on the the couch. The skinny little girl reminded her of a forgotten bird, abandonned by its mother before it could fly-left helpless in front of a monster TV set. Julene was perched on the edge of the sofa, tapping her foot, and for the first time since Kim had been home, Julene was smiling. It was a wistful half smile, but there there was no mistaking it. It was a smile. The minute Julene looked up and saw Kim, the smile dropped and her foot stopped tapping. 174 |
