Show she discovered it was missing. It could have been taken in the afternoon by a day student. That was more reasonable than a boarder taking it since a day student could hide it without her ever being able to find it. And day students were always coming up to the Residence after school. Of course, before she decided for sure that a day student took it, she'd check the other rooms on the second floor when everyone would be gone. Like a Friday night when the freshmen usually went to the movies. It was cold and dark when Kim and Pilar finished dressing into their uniforms in the locker room. Dew from the grass flicked onto Kim's socks and ankles as she and Pilar scuffled across the playing field, and the frosty air stung her hot skin. Spotlights shining on the Residence cast shadows on the field. As they walked, Pilar turned to Kim, her face furrowed in a question. "Why are you being so nice to me ?" she asked. Kim looked thoughtfully at Pilar and gave an answer she couldn't have given a week ago, or maybe two days ago. "Because I want to help you," she said. It wasn't forced or difficult or even awkward for Kim to say the words, because she felt them even stronger than she could say them. "You are nice," said Pilar.
