Show and typewriter-Miss Dennis had gone into an explosive tizzy, her flabby cheeks all flushed and boomed over the intercom that everyone was to search her room. Mechanically, girls opened closet doors, then shut them and told Miss Dennis they no idea where the missing article was when she came around to check. But, they assured her, they would certainly keep their eyes open for it. The whole search made Kim madder than ever. What did Miss Dennis expect the thief to do? Look on the floor and say 'Oh, here's Kim's stereo under my bed. I wonder how it got here?' How dumb! Pilar had undoubtedly gone to great pains to hide it. It certainly wasn't going to turn up because of a silly announcement. It became to clear to Kim that she wasn't going to get any help at all from the the counselor or any of the girls. She'd just have to take up the search herself. When all the girls on the second floor were at dinner that evening, Kim stayed behind in her room, not even telling Mimi was she had planned. In the first place, she thought, Mimi might think the idea was crazy, and the second place she didn't want anyone to know what she was up to. If it ever got back to Pilar, there was no telling what the Mexican would do. After all the floor was quiet and Kim was sure everyone was out of their rooms, she crept out into the hall.
