Show community to speak throughout the year, and the first noteworthy speaker was the Reverend Thomas from the First Presbyterian Church in San Francisco. The theme of his talk was The Sermon on the Mount. Tuesday morning the chapel was filled because attendance at assembly was required. The chapel had white stucco walls and a Spanish looking ceiling with dark beams. Light filtering through a stained glass window in back of the Reverend bounced off his shiny head. He peered down at the Bible on the podium through narrow half glasses, quoting the fifth chapter of Matthew: "And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain." Just as Kim was about to slip into peaceful contemplation with closed eyes, she could hear the Reverend in an assured voice talk about enslavement when one did merely what one was asked, but feelings of freedom when doing more than that which one was commanded to do. The Reverend sounded a sure trump: "Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away." The rhythm of the words washed over her, leaving her in a dreamy unconsciousness for the next thirty minutes until Mr. Prenzlow's piercing voice broke the spell by announcing a meeting for all the boarders in the Residence. 65 |
