But she went instead to her locker without saying anything further to Carol Ann. She changed into her cut-offs and sweat shirt. Inside the basketball court, she stood for a moment on the sidelines, hoping none of the upperclassmen besides Carol Ann would recognize her as a freshman. The red velvet curtains were pulled across the stage. The court was filled with girls dribbling balls and shooting. In addition to herself, Kim spotted four other freshmen. Pilar was practicing on the south basket. Deliberately, Kim chose to practice on the opposite basket.
