Show :er a "an had, taking down rebounds before number eight could get to them. In the last five seconds, she got the ball afte toss up and headed down the court with it. Pilar r< alongside her, the way she had done dozens of times in practice with Kim. Always, Kim would get four or five feet from the basket, go up for a jump shot, fake and throw the ball down to Pilar who go in for a lay up. Pilar looked expectantly at Kim, waiting for her to toss the ball to her as she did in practice. Kim had intended all along to simply go in for a lay up. It was her one chance to show Miss Fites how she could do in a game. But the anxious face of Pilar looking over at her automatically triggered the play she and Pilar had worked on so hard in practice. Kim ran into the basket faked a jump shot and tossed the ball to Pilar who took it gracefully into the basket, scoring the last point of the game. At the final buzzer, the Putnam students broke into a roar and ran onto the court like a swarm of grasshoppers. She stood with Pilar in the middle of the crowd, letting some of the glory rub off on her. In the locker room showers, Kim took an extra long time letting the streaming water prick her skin to relax her. She'd spent more energy worrying about when she was going to play than she'd actually used up on the court. But just the same, she was tired and the water loosened both her mind and her muscles. 123 |
