Show showed off his rippling muscles. He didn't look the least surprised to see Kim after she been away half a year; maybe he hadn't even noticed she'd been gone. He and his friends just kept coming for the basket like the 51st batallion, hardly recoginizing she was there. Showing off, T.J. took a shot from the foul line. It was a dumb shot with no arch and simply hit the rim and angled off to the side of the court, she could have put up a much better shot. Trying to appear unconcerned, Kim turned around and kept on playing until T. J. announced in a crackling adolescent voice, "We have a game in here now. " "I thought the gym was closed for the vacation," said Kim. "It is, but we still have a game." "But I was here first," said Kim, trying to hold her ground. "If you want to stay on the court, feel free, but I wouldn't advise it." T. J. looked at his four friends and they all laughed ignorantly. She knew when she was beaten. Disgusted and angry, she took her ball and headed out into the hall, heaving it against the metal lockers lining the wall. She'd be hanged if she was going to let T.J. and his friends or anyone else keep her from practising. Even if she had to shovel snow off Laura's driveway, she play. Her mother poked her head out of doorway down the hall. "Are you through already?" 173 |
