Show CHAPTER ELEVEN The last day of classes before the holiday was December twenty-second. It was a Friday, cold and drizzling. Kim had last period free because Miss Pearson canceled gym classes for that day. Kim needed to use the time to pack, but instead of going to the Residence after History Class, she walked up the the stairs of the Classroom and Administration building to the third floor. Pictures of past graduating classes back to 1903 lined the walls, and she now had to face the fact that her picture would never hang in that building. The lights were out in the classrooms and administration offices. The secretaries had gone home for the holidays, leaving bedragled plastic Christmas trees and decorations on their desks. There was a lonely emptiness in the halls, and Kim feared the person she had come to say good-bye to had gone. But down at the end of the hallway, a light shone in the CITG room. Kim peered inside the door and was glad when she saw Mrs. Parker sitting at her desk reading. She wore her round, tortoise shell glasses so that her eyes were even bigger and more inquisitive looking, as if she were eager to 146 |
