Show popular who was called first. T.J. took a deep breath, puffing his already athletic chest out even further. He held this stance, relishing his power, until every back in the classroom straightened and every face was begging, "Me first!" "Rodney Badger and Melissa Duncan", T. J. finally boomed out. Although it was only the first day, Kim could tell Rodney was T. J.'s best friend and Melissa the prettiest girl in the class. Several audible groans were heard. Miss Pingree hadn't said anything about groans. Kim didn't expect to be called first. After all, she was new and didn't even know T. J. . But she thought that maybe he would slide her into the middle by pointing to and saying, "The girl with the curly blond hair." Her mother had spent an hour curling her hair special the night before. But T. J. didn't even look her way- "Greg Parson and Shirley Waddell." T. J. belted out. By the time T.J. came to the middle of the class, he was sing-songing names out, as if it didn't really matter where these students stood in line. But when he came to the last four people in the class, he slowed his pace considerably. No one wanted to be last. T. J. knew this and he wanted to choose carefully. A boy with brown glasses looked awkwardly at his desk top. "Theodore Warner and Lester Peterson." Twenty six pairs of eyes were on Kim and the boy with the brown glasses. 12 |
