Show CHAPTE TWELVE Christmas day Mr. Huskinson gave Kim the best gift she received. He took Julene to his brother in law's where they spent the entire day. No having to sneak around the house in her nightgown Christmas morning, wondering if she'd run into Mr. Huskinson and no Julene and no Love Boat. Indeed, it was Christmas. The following morning Kim awoke with a dull headache. The day after Christmas always seemed like a letdown. She geared up for the big day for so long, that when it came and left, there was nothing else to look forward to and she felt depressed. It had snowed the night before. Wind had blown the icy flakes against sides of houses, sraying them in white and cloaking the roads and farms. The entire view out her bedroom window was one of deadening monotony for as far as she could see. Instead of giving her a feeling of spaciousness and freedom, the scene had strange, claustrophic effect on her, as if she'd been dropped in the middle of a vast wilderness with no way to escape. In the past, she had found the panorama inspiring and exhilarating. Now, it simply emphasized her captivity. The wind was blowing fiercely and her paned window was rattling 168 |
