Show Pilar didn't understand some of the phrases Miss Fites used in practice, so Kim found herself coaching Pilar in twice her normal voice, as if sheer volume would translate the words. A few times Kim caught herself almost shouting. At the end of the first week of practice with Pilar, she felt like Pilar had come so far that they ought to play one on one against each other. After all, Kim reasoned, Pilar's main problem was competing against someone. She just seemed to collapse under pressure, and if she didn't get Pilar used to playing under stress, she'd fall apart in the first game the way she had during tryouts. "Why don't we play one on one," Kim suggested. "One on one?" asked Pilar, puzzled. "That's where I guard you while you try to shoot and you do the same to me. The first one to twenty one wins." Immediately, Kim saw a tense look flash across Pilar's face. She put her arm on Pilar's shoulder, trying to reassure her. "It's not that hard to shoot while you're being guarded," Kim said. "But the first thing you've got to remember is not to get so worried about what your opponent is going to do that you forget your target. You're used to watching the guard than on the basket." "But she will block my shot if I do not watch her." "Then you change the shot. It's pretty hard for most girls to block a jump shot...Try it." Kim tossed the ball to Pilar. 113 |
